Chapter 8-Inspirers Due Jan. 27th

Inspirers are into self-expression. What is your favorite form of self-expression?

Respond to 2 people.

  1. I don’t think I’m much of an inspirer, I’m not very creative and I think self-expression is as varied as the number of people being questioned. I love to do woodworking; creating big pieces of furniture is very relaxing to me. When upset I can sand and sand and sand until the tension leaves my body. On the other hand, if I made a mistake, it creates tension until I get it fixed! I also love to piece quilt tops, choosing colors and placing fabrics together is as close as I get to an art form. (My stick men are hardly recognizable.)

  2. I actually have 2 favorite forms of self-expression. First, I sing. I am in a band called NCV. When I was younger, I sang in bars and night clubs in Michigan. Singing relaxes me and I find that I can convey emotions better with music in some situations. I also love to write. I have never sent anything to a publisher, I just do it for me mostly. I have notebooks full of poetry, short stories and some long ones. I have beautifully bound journal that my youngest daughter and I write letters back and forth in. We have been writing to each other in it since she was about 9 years old.She is seventeen now. It is a good way for her to express her feelings in a calm way without comment until I read it and reply. It will also be a way for her to reflect upon our relationship after I am gone. With my older daughters I used my writing in a different way. They hated to write so I had to change things up. When they would have problems of some kind, I would write them a humorous poem. For example, when my redheaded freckled daughter was being teased a school about her freckles, I wrote a funny poem about it and she was so proud that she had her very own poem, she didn't bother about the teasing so much. Her poem was--
I have freckles can't you see
There are spots all over me
I'll bet you think you're special too
But I've got freckles how bout you?

    1. I love your daughter's poem and what a great way to help preserve your relationship. Last year, I saved the acorns from my bur oak. I think my wife got tired of all of them that were stored in the refrigerator. I gave acorns to family and many of the people I worked with. I planted over 200 in Frazier Park and planted 20 of them in a big pot that stayed in the house over the winter. I watched over time and all 20 came up. It was therapeutic and, for me, a great stress reliever. In the spring, I repotted them and gave the little trees again to family and people that I worked with. I hope they continue to live. It was my way of sharing something that I love with others and perpetuating not only bur oaks, but relationships.

    2. What a beautiful idea, I love your daughter's poem and the journaling idea....one I will pass on to my sons with children. My oldest granddaughter loves to write; so this sounds perfect.

Alan: I like your tree story...what a neat thing to do.

    3. I loved the peom. Being a redhead (once upon a time) freckles were the bane of my life growing up. lol

    4. Chapter eight
I like to sew, put together scrapbooks, and garden. These are probably the main ways of how I self-express. I spend the most time gardening-mainly because it has to be done, but I would like to finish some sewing projects and a few scrapbooks I started a few years ago. I think my self-expression has been on hold or in a funk for a while.

      Alan,
I think giving acorns to people is such a unique and special idea. Even more rewarding is to plant some and watch them grow. Southwest Kansas needs more Oak trees, thanks for planting those acorns. Wow, if everyone planted one tree or 20 seed/acorns, we would have lots of shade.

      Judy,
I am glad you mentioned reading. I love to read, sometimes I don't get other stuff done because I want to read. I never thought about it being a way of self-expression, but hey there are some characters I can be for a short time. HA!

    5. I know what you mean about being in a funk. I think we all have our own forms of self-expression. However, sometimes we don't take the time to allow them to happen. I get in funks too and have to sometimes make myself use my expressive side.

  3. ~~Jerrie-- I have to disagree with you about being an inspirer. If you are in education, you have to channel your inner inspiration self. It helps to get the kids motivated and interested in learning
~~Alan-- It is funny how different things are therapeutic to different people. I love plants and nature, but trying to grow them is frustrating to me because I usually kill them.

  4. My favorite form of self expression is sewing-piecing quilt tops and quilting to be specific. It is such a relaxing activity for me. I can go into my sewing room and "forget" everything else! The feeling of completing something and it turning out gives me great satisfaction! I LOVE my job, but I also LOVE quilting!!

    1. If this is Dana P from Scott City, I have proof of her ability to quilt in the form of the most wonderful Wizard of Oz quilt ever put on this planet :) If it's not Dana, then you are lucky to be able to quilt because this farm girl does NOT have the patience (too much tearing out when I was in 4-H sewing) to even do anything more than sew on a button :)

  5. I would have to say that my favorite form of self-expression is exercising. I love to run, and play any kind of sport that I can. (basketball, tennis, biking, running) It allows me to get away and not think about everything that is going on in my life. It is relaxing to me. I think I just like being outdoors. Another form of self-expression is taking pictures. I never leave anywhere without my camera. I love taking pictures. It is so enjoyable I am thinking about starting my own photography business.

Dana- I also like to do this. I really do not know how to quilt but I usually do the iron transfers and paint the pictures and then my grandma puts them together to make my quilt.

Clodfelter- I also like to sing as well, but for me I sing in the privacy of my home, car, shower. I am not a very good singer according to my husband.

    1. Ashley - I agree about the exercise. There are days when the only thing I want to do is get outside and go for a ride on my bike or go for a long walk!

    2. I also find that exercising is relaxing, especially when it's part of my routine. It helps ease my nerves and calm me down after a long day!

  6. My favorite thing to do is sing. I can put on my ipod and turn on my favorite songs and get on my bike or take out running and the time goes by so quickly. I find I can sink myself into the songs and daydream and just relax. Now ask my students about my singing and you might get another story but each to their own LOL!

    1. Amy - I tend to sing for my students also. I do not think they truly appreciate my talent!!

    2. I like to sing too, but not everyone enjoys listening to me and much as I like to sing!! You can come sing to me anytime and I'll just join in!

  7. I tend to show my self expression through gardening, organizing and reading. It is so relaxing to get outside and feel the dirt on my hands, feel the sun on my back and the birds chirping like mad! I am sure that this lowers my blood l pressure tremendously!! I also enjoy organizing. If I can file, color code or develop a notebook, I am in heaven. It gives me a lot of satisfaction when everything is in its place and looks so pretty!! My final self expression is reading. When I read, I can be anyone I want to be. I can think what I want and do what I want. Of course it helps when you have a great imagination!!

    1. I also love to read and organize. Reading is a great outlet for me as well. I don't do it all of the time, but when I get in a reading mood, I really enjoy! I love to organize. I feel so much better after everything is organized and in its place. It puts my mind at ease, knowing that everything is in order.

    2. Judy: I too, enjoy gardening and listening to the birds! I can spend hours at the nursery, planning and picking out flowers. I also enjoy starting my own plants (tomatoes).

    3. Judy-I like to garden, but I wish I could plan and put flowers together better-I need someone to do it for me!! I need someone to come over and help with landscaping!!

    4. I agree that gardening outside with the sunshine is relaxing. I also like to read but never considered that it might be inspiring. Now the organizing is something you might inspire me to do. I am about as disorganized at home as it gets. I try-I buy totes/tubs—I label—but it always ends up a big mess and I can’t find anything I’m looking for.

  8. Gardening would be an area I show my self-expression. I love to visit greenhouses in the spring and pick out various flowers and plants. I have several planters, and each year I enjoy trying different combinations and varieties flowers. Some years the combinations have worked great and other times, not as much.

Judy- I also love to read. Not necessarily educational or even inspirational reading, but novels that you can get lost in the story. Even though I enjoy reading, I don't allow myself to read much. I have a tendency to read, read, read until I finish the book, even if it means neglecting other duties!

Jerrie and Dana- You both indicated you enjoy quilting. I think quilts are absolutely beautiful and it is something I have always wanted to try. I don't know the first thing about sewing, so I would definitely need a patient teacher and lots of instruction!

  9. I am a gardener too. I like to dig in the warm earth and plant seeds and watch them grow. I do both veggies and flowers. Even though it is only January I am already planning and plotting where I want to plant what. (Course I still need to go clean out some leftovers from last year first). There is something very therapeutic about growing plants. I also like to reap the fruits of my labor and we tend to eat from the garden most of the summer. (somethings most of the winter too.)

  10. One of my favorite forms of self expression is baking. It is very relaxing to me. I love to try out new recipes and see how they turn out. This is a fairly new love of mine, as I did not do much cooking while growing up or during college. Desserts are most fun for me to make, but I also enjoy baking bread.

I enjoy exercising. It relaxes me, but it's hard to be motivated to do it all of the time. Long walks outside in the spring or fall are the best!

    1. I admire you and my mother’s talent of baking. If you are anything like my mother she seems to whip up rolls, bread, cakes, pies, and other recipes in a flash. It would take me all day to try and I would just end up with a big ball of goooooooo and a very messy kitchen. I just tend to leave it to the experts and enjoy it.

    2. I love baking too. This is especially relaxing to me when I have no sort of timeline. I love to try new recipes out too.

  11. I don’t usually go around tooting my horn and don’t consider myself as inspiring. Notice that I have put this question off until about the last minute. My friends seem to think I am good at arranging flowers, tying bows, etc. I keep telling them that anybody can do it if I can. Needless to say, these friends put me in charge of flowers/decorations for various events and weddings that they have going on. I also like to grow flowers, so during the summer I cut & arrange flowers to bring inside regularly. My grand-daughters love to come over to help grandma water and cut flowers and it is fun to help them decide what to put their flowers in and help them put them on the table for dinner or to give their mom.

  12. For me a form is of self - expression is being able to relax and read and the other is games/exercise. Mostly I like to walk in the spring or fall or play games on my wii such as tennis or bowling. Great way to let of some steam. I also love playing board games too word games are my favorite. To me reading is a quiet way to tune out the world and get lost in another world and forget my troubles for a while.

  13. I think that cooking would be a great form of expression. While I love to cook I have to admit that I am not much when it comes to baking breads that have to rise. I do not have the patience and they always are flat. Go figure!

    1. My favorite thing about cooking is baking bread. Cara I have a sure-fire recipe for sweet breads that you can't make go flat if you ever want it...state fair purple when I was a senior :)

  14. Sorry, for some reason any tech savvy bones in my body have left. It seems I can not figure out how reply under your comments. This is in comment to Judy. While I love to be outside I have to admit that when it comes down to it I am not much of a gardener. I will when the mood strikes, but for the most part I tend to be the kind of person who likes to meander through gardens looking and enjoying what others have done. :)

  15. When I hear the term “self-expression,” I think of anything involving the arts (i.e. painting, dancing, poetry, etc.). Since I don’t really do any of those things on a regular basis (and am DEFINITELY not any good at them, haha!), I had a hard time trying to figure out what my favorite form of self-expression was. I honestly didn’t think I had one, haha! However, after reading a couple other people’s posts, I guess my favorite form of self-expression would be cleaning/organizing. Whenever I’m super stressed, I tend to turn to cleaning, and eventually it calms me down. When I was in college (grad school ESPECIALLY), and it came time to take finals, the Praxis, defend my thesis, or do any other terrifying task, you could bet money that you’d be able to eat off any floor in my house the night before, haha!

    LeNnis~
I WISH scrapbooking was my favorite form of self-expression! I admire you for how much time and effort goes into one of those! During high school, a lot of my friends were into scrapbooking, and I loved looking at the projects they had made, so I thought I’d make one for the guy I was dating for his graduation present. I had a lot of fun being creative with the first 4 or 5 pages, but after about the 12th or so, I just wanted to get the sucker done! You could tell EXACTLY where I started to get frustrated because about 1/3 of the way through, the whole thing turned into a PreK, macaroni, glitter, and glue type of art project, haha! That was definitely the first and LAST time I ever tried that ☺

    Jamie~
I love baking too! But HATE cooking “real” food, haha! I didn’t really ever cook growing up or while in college either, but I still haven’t grown out of that phase, haha! I think I’m kind of turned off from cooking because I feel like it’s a waste to go to that much effort and dirty up that many dishes just to make something for myself. Instead, I can just eat a tortilla, put out ZERO effort/no dishes, and still be happy as a clam ☺

  16. One of my favorite forms of self-expression is taking pictures. I especially like to take pictures of nature, animals and of course my grandbabies. I love to capture the little "ah-ha" moments in life. I also like to bake....making bread is especially therapeutic and the smell of fresh bread out of the oven is just good for the soul!

    1. I wish I had your joy of taking pictures. I am never one to think of taking pictures or "have an eye for it". Life isn't missed so much with people like you who enjoy and remember to capture the moment.

    2. Jamie, I agree with you on the baking part, I would much rather bake then cook. I think it is because it can stay around longer and taste better - not that I'm that bad at cooking, but that its more enjoyable to eat :)

  17. I envy the skills of an inspirer, being able to move groups of people at a time. Seems I usually take more at a one at a time approach. I do enjoy self-expression though, baking, refinishing furniture, sewing, making jewelry, gardening - maybe it's really the learning to do something new all the time that I enjoy. It's all much more therapeutic for me than cleaning something that's just going to be a mess again tomorrow. Maybe I need to get together with someone who finds cleaning therapeutic. Have any work you'd want to trade Brittany? Just kidding, one of my New Year's resolutions was to keep on the kids to keep their toys picked up a little better, and we're all doing pretty well so far...

  18. I like to paint rooms and decorate. I can spend hours drawing up different designs for rooms. Anything from how the room would look better with the furniture rearrange, to installing exposed beams in the ceiling and exchanging the carpet for hardwood floors. It's something I've done since I was very little and really enjoy doing now.

  19. Inspirers are into self-expression. What is your favorite form of self-expression?

I love to write. I like writing stories and using my imagination to create characters. I also enjoy music. I play the flute and have since 5th grade.

I don't always take the time to do these things and I should because I enjoy them.

  20. I love to sing at church, especially during the Christmas season. I also love to play volleyball and softball and I hope that by doing those sports at my age, I can inspire younger girls and women to play them as long as they are able too.
